The HIP/App: A digital version of the Hypnotic Induction Profile
Welcome
HIP/App Essentials

The HIP is a 5-10 minute procedure that evaluates an individual's ability to enter, respond to, and exit a trance in a manner that can be measured and quantified
The homepage of the app provides essential information on the development of the HIP, including links to the creators of the original version of the HIP, Drs. David and Herbert Spiegel, and a link to the Spiegels text, Trance and Treatment.
Information buttons throughout the app offer useful information about hypnosis, hypnotizability and the operations of the device.
Instructional Videos and Table of Contents

The table of contents of the HIP/app is interactive, allowing individuals new to the exam to preview the test items and summary score pages. The App also includes a playlist of videos demonstrating the administration of the HIP and an instructive video collection of graded Eye-Rolls (an indicator of the potential for hypnosis), courtesy of David Spiegel.
Color-coded Instructions

The HIP begins with the Eye Roll test, a rapid method for initiating hypnosis. Notice that instructions to be read verbatim to participants are contained in green boxes. Tan boxes contain instructions to aid the examiner in administering the exam. Buttons for recording responses appear below each instruction.
Navigation buttons at the bottom of each page allow the examiner to move forward or backward through the exam.
Instructional Branching

Several items of the exam permit additional trials to complete the test. The item shown here, Instructional Arm Levitation, is scored on a scale of 0-4. Participants start with a score of 4, and with each additional prompt their score is reduced by one. The app uses instructional branching to deliver additional prompts as needed to achieve levitation. An instructional video at the top of the page serves as a learning aid.
Timing Tool

One of the more challenging of the HIP items to administer, Signaled Arm Levitation, requires the participant to respond to a post-induction signal that their arm, when lowered by the examiner, will return to an upright position. Scoring the item is a function of response time and the number of prompts required to achieve levitation. To make the examiner’s task easier, we’ve embedded a digital stopwatch for timing the delivery of prompts and scoring the item.
Scoring and Interpretation Aids

The score summary page shows the individual test items of the HIP, A-L. Below the item scores are the three exam Summary Scores:
The Profile Score represents the participant’s biological potential for hypnotizability as reflected in the Eye-Roll Sign.
The Induction Score, an index of trait hypnotizability reflects the participant’s responses on the five sensory-motor items of the exam, identified with an asterisk in the item list.
The Profile Grade reflects the participants ability to utilize their biological capacity to create behavioral change. The Profile Grade is obtained by comparing the biological potential for hypnosis with the psycho-social ability to express one’s hypnotic potential.
Printed Report Option

The HIP/App provides an option to generate a printed summary report. The report contains a list of the scores that an individual obtained on the test items of the exam and their summary scores. It also provides information about the HIP and descriptions of the three exam summary scores.
Exam Archives

Individual users of the app can view the history of exams they have conducted by referring to the Exam History section. The HIP/App is entirely HIPPA compliant. Exams are identified only by Exam ID’s and participants by PIN numbers. Exam history data points include Age, Gender, Date, Profile Scores, Induction Scores, and Profile Grades. Group Admins can access the exam history of all users in their group through the admin menu.
